In late 1979 the Rotary Club of Neutral Bay decided to sponsor a Probus club for semi-retired and retired men from the professions and business in the local area. At a meeting held at Cammeray Golf Club on Tuesday 12th February 1980 it was decided to form the Probus Club of Neutral Bay.

Our club was the thirteenth formed in New South Wales where there are now over 600, and 2,200 nationwide. Our initial membership was 28 and has grown to 140.

The Foundation President was Don Mackie, and in March 1980 Stan Suffren was elected the first full term president. The management was originally in the hands of 6 office bearers which was increased to 8 in 1982 and is now 15.

Our members come from all over the North Shore - including Cremorne, Mosman, Middle Harbour, Seaforth, Wollstonecraft, Northwood, Willoughby, Northbridge, Forestville, Roseville, Lindfield and Pymble.

Monthly meetings were originally held at the Cammeray Golf Club. In response to an increase in membership to 41, it was decided to change the venue in 1982 to the North Sydney Anzac Memorial Club. It remained there until 2002 when the growing membership required it to move again to the North Sydney Leagues Club where it meets today on the second Tuesday of every month (except December / January) at 10am.

The format of meetings has evolved over time and starts with a 20-minute session for 'formal' business including reports on past and future outings and activities, and new member inductions. This is followed by a 10 minute 'Personal Corner' where a member speaks about a subject which reflects his experience or interest. After a 30-minute break for coffee / tea and socialising, the guest speaker is introduced to give a one hour presentation on an interesting and relevant topic. Members often remain after the meeting to catch up with friends and have a meal in the Club Bistro.
